c.1874. Drawn by leading British architect and founder of Watts Thomas Garner, this was originally a silk and gold thread brocatelle originating from an early fifteenth century painting by the Master of St Bartholomew. Originally in a cloth of gold for ecclesiastical vestments, this small-scale design is incredibly ornate, with gold flowers dancing across the shifting silk. It was used to magnificent effect as upholstery in the Burj Al Arab, the only seven star hotel in the world.
