Aurea Indienne
Bold, delicate and delicious that's how we would describe the bespoke collection of fabrics and wall-coverings that celebrate our collaboration with Castle Howard. Aurea Indienne is part of the new Castle Howard Indienne Collection and honours the tradition of toiles peintes or ‘painted cottons’ that were imported into Europe from the late sixteenth century. These imported cottons or calicoes proved popular for making garments and soft furnishings. To satisfy the tastes of their western customers the trading companies lost no time in producing textiles destined exclusively for European markets, but which still remained exotic in character.
Originally documented as an Indienne Tree of Life border fabric with large stylised flowers on a meandering branch offset by the typical vermicelli backprint, probably purchased by Rosalind, 9th Countess. Meticulously redrawn to create a continuous, decorative, wide floral Indienne stripe.
