Benwick
c.1790. considered to be French in origin, this wallpaper is typical of the French Louis XVI style, which fed into the Regency fashion in England. Louis XVI style came into its own partly as a reaction towards the excesses of Rococo, and partly on the basis of Rousseau's call for "natural virtue" and honest sentiment — as such, designs during this period celebrate nature's wild beauty while respecting its inherent order and worthiness. Benwick epitomises this design philosophy — long twisting vines with sprays of tiny leaves and berries form elegant helixes that are punctuated by smart stripes that is delicate without being fussy.
