c.1890. One of three designs now in the Watts’ archives commissioned for Sir John Ninian Comper by M. Perkins & Sons, Comper Lily is a majestic wool silk of twisting foliage and flowers, amongst which fly birds and mythical griffins grasping livestock in their talons. This medieval heritage design is glorious woven in gold and black on a raspberry ground.
