Rosalind Indienne

Bold, delicate and delicious that's how we would describe the bespoke collection of fabrics that celebrate our collaboration with Castle Howard. Rosalind Indienne is part of the new Castle Howard Indienne Collection and is named after Rosalind, 9th Countess who sought to redecorated the house in the last decades of the nineteenth century by gathering together a remarkable collection of textiles. This unique archive offers a glimpse into the vibrant colours and designs fashionable at this time which the Indienne Collection brings back to life.

Toiles peintes or ‘painted cottons’ were imported into Europe from the late sixteenth century. These imported cottons or calicoes proved popular for making garments and soft furnishings. To satisfy the tastes of their western customers the trading companies lost no time in producing textiles destined exclusively for European markets, but which still remained exotic in character - a factor that was to remain key to their success.

This Indienne celebrates Rosalind's pivotal role in this story and honours her legacy to Castle Howard.
