Watts 1874 x Eastnor Castle at London Design Week:

A Celebration of Historic Wallpapers

London Design Week is a highlight in the global design calendar—a time when the best and brightest in interiors come together to explore new collections, celebrate craftsmanship, and spark creative dialogue. This year, Watts 1874 is delighted to showcase our latest collaboration with Eastnor Castle, unveiling a remarkable collection of wallpapers inspired by the castle’s rich decorative history.

Our latest Portfolio of Designs reinterprets Eastnor Castle’s exquisite chinoiserie and paravent designs for modern interiors, offering a unique opportunity to bring centuries-old artistry into contemporary spaces.

A Collaboration Rooted in Heritage

The Watts 1874 x Eastnor Castle collaboration was born from an unexpected yet serendipitous encounter. When Imogen Hervey-Bathurst, the newly appointed Chatelaine of Eastnor Castle, stepped into our showroom at Chelsea Harbour, she found herself in conversation with our Creative Director, Fiona Flint. It quickly emerged that this was not the first connection between Eastnor and Watts—back in the 1990s, Watts 1874 collaborated with Imogen’s parents to create bespoke fabrics for the castle’s Billiard Room.

Inspired by a shared passion for historical design, the conversation soon turned to Imogen's new vision: retelling Eastnor Castle’s story through creative partnerships. Given Watts’ long-standing reputation for translating decorative designs into contemporary interiors, the collaboration felt inevitable.

Queen Mary and Friends: Chinoiserie Reborn

This collection takes inspiration from Queen Mary’s Bedroom, one of the most intricately adorned spaces within Eastnor Castle. The original walls feature hand-painted chinoiserie artwork of astonishing detail—flourishing botanicals, delicate birds, and sweeping tree branches, all harmoniously arranged in a tapestry of colour and form.

Using photomoasic technology, we transformed it into a printable chinoiserie, ensuring that the exquisite hand-painted details remain intact while offering modern applications.

From this process, we also developed standalone botanical designs, extracting key elements such as Japonica Flowers, Seed Pods, and Gooseberry, which now feature as individual wallpaper options. These designs provide a refined way to introduce historical chinoiserie into contemporary interiors, whether as a statement wall or an elegant backdrop.
