Taymouth Castle: Restoring Grandeur in the Scottish Highlands
On the serene shores of Loch Tay, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Taymouth Castle rises with a quiet authority, its Neo-Gothic silhouette both imposing and poetic. Long regarded as one of Scotland’s most extraordinary historic estates, the castle is now entering a new chapter, carefully restored to its former splendour while reimagined for contemporary life.
This ambitious transformation has been led by Discovery Land Company, whose vision centres on preserving architectural integrity while revitalising heritage properties for modern use. At Taymouth, this meant navigating the rigorous requirements of a Grade I listed building under the guidance of Historic Environment Scotland, ensuring that every intervention respected the site’s historical significance, from its structure to its surrounding landscape.
The result is an ultra-luxury private members’ club that does not simply occupy a historic shell, but inhabits it with sensitivity. Original features have been meticulously restored, while new layers of comfort and functionality have been introduced.

A Design Dialogue at Watts 1874
During London Design Week, this remarkable project took centre stage at the Watts 1874 showroom in Chelsea Design Centre, as part of the House’s Design Dialogue series. The conversation brought together design professionals and enthusiasts to explore the realities of restoring heritage at scale and navigating a project's complex constraints.
Interior designer Kate Bingham, founder of her London and Sussex-based studio, offered a deeply personal account of the three-year renovation project. She recalled her first encounter with the castle, an experience marked as much by awe as by the enormity of the task ahead.
Her work on Taymouth Castle has since been recognised with the prestigious Interior of the Year award, a testament to her ability to balance historical reverence with contemporary refinement.
She took this opportunity to thank with eloquent words all the members of her team for their patience and dedicated hard work.

Reimagining Space, Respecting History
The restoration demanded both technical rigour and creative ingenuity. Vast volumes, monumental stone walls, and complex architectural features presented constant challenges. If the ground floor was found relatively intact, the second and third floors were in a state of advanced decay, including flooding and missing walls. Yet it is precisely within these constraints that the project finds its most compelling moments.
Former defensive turrets presented a significant design hurdle; they were utilized for various purposes and intimate spaces, including bathrooms, wine tasting areas, tea rooms… each transformation carefully calibrated to enhance usability without erasing the building’s narrative. To ensure the turret layouts functioned for the American client, the team constructed a full-scale wooden mockup of a bathroom, including a curved vanity and banquette seating, to verify movement and comfort.
WATTS 1874 bold golden tones and designs
Elsewhere, grand reception rooms have been redefined through layers of velvet texture, bold colour and material, allowing history to remain present while inviting modern comfort.
Watts1874 contributed to the outstanding renovation of this historical castle through its noble textiles. Kate Bingham design team partnered with Watts 1874 for fabrics, opting for custom colorways of Pugin-inspired, neo-gothic, and damask designs to ensure the fabrics would not be discontinued. Fabric walling was utilized throughout the project to conceal structural wall cracks and manage acoustics in large, high-ceilinged spaces that had been converted into more intimate rooms, such as the whisky tasting room. Finally, the team developed a prototype dining chair, covered with the Tybalt Almond Old Gold (inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet impassioned character), which was tested by various house guests for three months to ensure comfort for the members before manufacturing 60 units. The use of Watts1874's most iconic designs was a perfect illustration of craftsmanship reinforcing heritage and authenticity.

A Living Heritage
The renovations of Taymouth Castle have brought new life to this historic Scottish landmark, transforming it into a unique destination that blends ancient charm with modern comfort, offering guests a truly immersive experience in a stunning, historical setting, with incredible access into the surrounding.
In bringing together architecture, craftsmanship and storytelling, with timeless elegance, the project embodies a broader design philosophy of respecting the existing architecture rather than overcomplicating it, which helped maintain a calm atmosphere. The past is not something to replicate, but something to get inspiration from. Taymouth Castle stands today as a living destination.
