Our Legacy

A Heritage of Design and Craftsmanship

In the world of luxury interior design, few names command the same level of reverence as Watts 1874. A name synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship, historical significance, and design, Watts 1874 has built an extraordinary legacy that has spanned generations. But how did this remarkable company come into being? The answer lies in the vision of one of Britain’s most influential architectural dynasties—the Gilbert Scott’s.

George Gilbert Scott, Founder of Watts 1874

The origins of Watts 1874 can be traced back to the golden age of Victorian Britain, a period defined by grand architectural ambition and meticulous attention to detail. At the heart of this era stood Sir George Gilbert Scott, a pioneering architect whose work included some of the most iconic Gothic Revival buildings of the 19th century. Scott’s designs were characterised by their intricate ornamentation, rich detailing, and deep appreciation of historical forms.

Understanding the importance of decorative elements in his architectural masterpieces, Scott sought to create a company that could bring his vision to life. Alongside his son, George Gilbert Scott Jr., and later his grandson, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the family set out to establish a design house that would provide the highest quality decorative materials for buildings, ensuring that craftsmanship was not just an aesthetic feature but an integral part of architectural identity.

Recognising the need for excellence in decorative craftsmanship, Gilbert Scott founded Watts & Co. in 1874. The company was established as a dedicated supplier of high-end interior furnishings, specialising in textiles, wallpapers, and metalwork that reflected the grandiosity of the Gothic Revival movement. From its inception, Watts 1874 was not merely a business but a creative atelier, embodying the meticulous vision of the Gilbert Scott family.

Over the decades, Watts 1874 has remained true to its founding ethos while evolving with the changing tides of design.
