Watts1874 participation in Chelsea Flower Show

As a British Heritage brand, Watts 1874 is really honoured to take part into Chelsea Flower Show this year, through Country Life’s stand, « A Garden Lover’s Library ».

At this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Country Life presents A Garden Lover’s Library, an interior conceived by architect George Saumarez Smith from Adam Architecture. Intimate in scale yet rich in narrative, the space draws on the quiet complexities of English style, layered, personal, and, in the architect’s own words, “a little bit imperfect.” It is a room shaped by accumulation: books gathered over decades, drawings pinned and preserved, objects chosen for their memory as much as their beauty.

Central to this vision is a bespoke panoramic wallcovering by Watts 1874, translating the architect’s original pencil drawings into a fully immersive environment. Each line, with its inherent movement and irregularity, has been meticulously preserved by the Maison’s in-house studio, then printed onto paperback linen with a delicacy that honours the hand while elevating it through outstanding craftsmanship. The china blue palette, subtle, and inspired by Delftware, establishes a gentle rhythm across the room, anchoring its detailed composition.

More than a decorative surface, the wallcovering operates as an architectural element in its own right, being true to Watts1874 founder’s vision, as practicing architects, constantly in search for beauty. This bespoke wallcovering frames the space, guides the eye and reinforces the sense of a life lived among books, creative ideas and historical memories. In doing so, it embodies a broader philosophy shared by both architect and maker: that decorative arts are not just ornamental, but essential in shaping lively atmosphere with story and meaning.

Brought to life through a close dialogue between creative disciplines, as many designers, craftspeople and makers have worked behind the stand, it also reflects the enduring relevance of craftsmanship within contemporary interiors. At Chelsea Flower Show, Watts 1874 revisit heritage and craftsmanship, placing tradition at the heart of a living, constantly evolving context.
