Daphnis et Chloé c.18th Century
The story of “Daphnis et Chloé” has not been woven often by Aubusson if we refer to the
identified texts and pieces remaining. La Cité internationale de la tapisserie et de l’art
tissé, Aubusson,” has recently acquired the only known set to this day.
This is a set of 6 tapestries which belonged to the Chateau de Vaulserre, Dauphiné, including a very large piece representing the wedding reception of Daphnis and Chloé and five smaller pieces.
The Aubusson weaving technique used for thosetapestries is precise and with fresh colours.
An unusual inverted weave for Aubusson has reduced the differences of this serie with “Les Gobelins”, the rival tapestry makers. This has installed an ambiguity concerning the provenance.
