Behind the Scenes of Our Bespoke Interior Design
"It's a process, but, yes, we can do that," our director says into the phone in answer to a client's enquiry about whether or not Watts can personalise a colourway, change the figures on a Tableau Scenique's transcription of a famous historical tapestry, or handmake passementerie exactly to the required specifications.
It's an answer we give with enthusiasm– the inkling of a challenge already forming in our minds– and it's an answer we believe reflects the original spirit of our archive. For example, if you take a look at the Dore Lily fabric on our website, you will find the following description: "Originally woven by hand, Dore Lily would have been created of woollen 'stuff' when it was conceived in the late 1890s." This fabric embodies the can-do attitude that has driven the creation of some of the most of the beautiful designs in the interior world.
Here at Watts, we love trying new things to bring interior design visions to life. However, bespoke interior design and design production is just as much about the process as it is about the end result. And it is a process that involves teamwork, communication, international effort, and an abundance of "tinkering," as we like to call it.
We must admit, sometimes our creations do not always come out right. Just a few days ago, we tried out a new colourway for a fabric. Our creative director held the material in her hands, ran her fingers across the designs, and promptly declared, "Oh dear. The back looks better than the front!"
These are the sorts of adventures and misadventures that make up the bespoke process. We will have that fabric woven again (and again and again) until we get it just the way you want it to look. Yes, it is a process; but, yes, we can do that. We love this part of our job, and we love this part of Watts. We truly believe that– with teamwork, hard work, and creativity– those bits and pieces that begin as "woolen stuff" can turn into the timeless masterpieces we cherish for the rest of our lives.
We will end this week's blog post with this: please do not hesitate to reach out to us by email or phone if you have an enquiry about bespoke options. We would love to speak with you about any questions, ideas, or inspirations you might have– no matter how wild you might think they seem! And, really, isn't being wild half the fun of it? That's the "Watts way," after all...
